Background

The environment in which Public Sector IT operates has changed rapidly in the past few years. Public Sector organisations are under extreme pressure to respond quickly to clients’ needs and get their products to market faster.

IT departments have changed significantly as a result of these pressures, through the adoption of Agile development practices but many operations teams are struggling to offer the levels of service and the high rates of change that are demanded by their digital teams.

DevOpsGuys recognises this need and our solutions provide a response to these demands. In recent years, we have worked closely with Government Digital Services (GDS) in the UK public sector to deliver services and solutions which enable digital teams building government services to meet the “Digital by Default” service standard.

We have provided some examples of our work with Public Sector organisations below:

Companies House

Companies House has a strategic plan to transform the way customers and businesses interact with it. The plan centres on becoming a 100% digital organisation and providing open data that fully links to information from other government agencies.

In order to assist Companies House with the business and technical challenges involved in this Digital Transformation, DevOpsGuys completed an onsite assessment of the agency’s software delivery process. The subsequent report made specific recommendations to address some of cultural, procedural and technological factors that were impeding progress.

DevOpsGuys has subsequently provided engineering resource to migrate critical Continuous Integration systems from on-premise to the Cloud as well as automating the deployment and provisioning of the entire platform using Jenkins, Ansible and Terraform tooling.

Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs

DevOpsGuys worked with the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs as part of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Delivery Programme to create an automated Continuous Deployment pipeline into a UKCloud (formerly Skyscape) hosted environment.

The solution included using open-source tools such as Ansible and the GDS vCloud tools as well as commercial solutions including TeamCity CI, Nexus and Sonar.

Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency

DevOpsGuys was asked by DVLA to review and document the current state of their Collaboration and Continuous Integration environment, which is a collection of services and applications hosted on the Digital Services Platform (DSP).

The review included an operation readiness assessment of the environment, the implementation of continuous integration as well as a skills gap analysis.

The ultimate goal was to reduce the risks and incidents that were occurring as a result of manual infrastructure configuration management and deployment, and to meet the Digital by Default guidelines.

DevOpsGuys has since provided DVLA with a team of DevOps consultants to implement the specified automation solutions that were highlighted in the report.

Gov.UK

The Government Digital Service (GDS) supported 8 government departments in the delivery of 25 exemplar digital services for public use. Each service was required to adhere to the Digital by Default Service Standard, which ensures digital teams build high quality government services.

DevOpsGuys was asked to review each service against the web operations aspects of the standard, testing compliance and progress against each service standard. The review was used to identify any gaps or issues with the proposed service and provide an action plan for tackling any areas of concern.

Ministry of Justice

The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG), an agency of the Ministry of Justice, was embarking on a Digital Transformation when it engaged with DevOpsGuys. The aims of the organisation were to reduce transaction costs; make operations more cost effective; increase scalability; improve flexibility and expand adaptability. The focus was on automation as well as repeatable code and architectural patterns across services.

DevOpsGuys provided OPG with a team of DevOps consultants to assist in building a Continuous Delivery pipeline hosted in AWS. This included full “infrastructure as code” server automation via SaltStack and CloudFormation, as well as Continuous Integration via Jenkins.
